2021 Victorian State Titles: The VSC Match Report

The Victorian Hobie Cat Association, in conjunction with Safety Beach Sailing Club and Nicholas Lynch Real Estate, put on another fabulous State Titles in the deep south of the state that is the Mornington Peninsula. In what were light and very shifty conditions (the absolute DREAM for any Hobie sailor), the race management team managed to get 5 nail-biting races in over the 3 days of scheduled racing.

Our mighty team of Hobie 14 competitors from VSC included the young and fiery Bryn Robinson-Mills; the cheeky yet ever-so-dapper Pat Butler; the self-described GOAT Mick Butler; the big-man-of-the-hour himself Andrew McKenzie; and featuring the long-awaited return of our favourite XXXX drinking, loveable larrikin, Richard Quinn!

After a large and unforgiving Sunday night, the final results came in on Monday afternoon with Pat on “Cheeky II” taking out the championship with a whopping 6 point lead ahead of his ‘has-been’ father Mick. Some will argue that the sheer lack of weight carried by the younger Butler was the key to his success. While some rumour the older and slightly more wise Butler has strategically given his son a false sense of security leading into the Nationals later in the year. Only time will tell what will become of this escalating rivalry.

Closely followed was Andrew on 12 points, slipping into 3rd position narrowly taking out Victorian Zak Rowdon on countback.
One to look out for is Bryn Robinson-Mills on the helm, taking out his 3rd consecutive Youth Championship on the Hobie 14. Great things to come from this kid in the future. Stay tuned.

Special mentions go to our NSW brethren Hayley Fisher and father David for taking out the Hobie 16 Masters! The pair narrowly missed out by 1 point in the Opens to resident Victorian hotshots, Cam and Naomi.

And who could forget about Upu Kila and Ainslie Gordon for once again taking out the Hobie 16 Grand Masters, reminding the Victorians how they should’ve got onto Big Dan sooner about keeping those borders closed for a few weeks longer!

Once again, a huge shoutout to the ever-reliable John Eastment for making the trip down to help out on the start boat! His passion for VSC and Hobie racing is something that is truly spectacular!

A reminder that the QLD State Titles is taking place over the Easter Long Weekend up in Lake Cootharaba. This event is shaping up to be an optimal opportunity to get some early training in for the Jervis Bay Nationals taking place at the end of the year.
